In a small community like Mt. Washington, this dream is not so far-fetched.

  News and Information

Mt. Washington is a collaborative learning community. The partnership between our school, parents and community members is outstanding and has been going on for quite some time now.

Long History of Working Together

The story of Mount Washington Elementary began in September 1867, when Perley Lovejoy convinced community members that there was a need for a public school. This school, housed in Saffell Hall, was entitled "School No.8" by Baltimore County in 1877. The school became a success, with a new four-room building constructed at the corner of Lochlea and Sulgrave in 1882 and a second floor added in 1908. In 1918, Baltimore City annexed Mt Washington and renamed this building "School No. #221." By 1950, the school was so popular that it was quite overcrowded. Even with the use of the old Enoch Pratt Library branch as an annex, there still was not enough room. In 1961, the present school building was completed and the old building was torn down. Throughout the history of our school is the story of parents, teachers and community members working together to support our children. These efforts go as far back at 1908 when community members raised $30,000 for the school. Did you know that Emergency Information Cards currently used by BCPSS originated in 1949 when Mt. Washington parents and school administrators agreed upon the need for fast and accurate emergency information? Our PTO telephone directory dates back to 1950! These are just a few of the numerous ways parents, community members and faculty have brought positive growth to Mt. Washington. Mt. Washington and its successes remains a story of parent, teacher and community involvement.

Working Together Today

This collaboration continues today and is evident throughout the building where parent volunteers constantly lend a helping hand. The Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) exemplifies the strength of our parent involvement in enhancing the learning environment at our school. Through a variety of fundraisers, the PTO raises tens of thousands of dollars annually to supplement the school’s resources in order to offer our children a well-rounded learning experience. The PTO also sponsors social events to bring our families together in a relaxed setting. Moreover, community members embrace our school; their support is demonstrated in numerous ways including serving on the School Improvement Team, providing volunteers and financial support for special activities and vocally advocating for the important role that our school plays in the vitality of the community.
